USS Haraden Ships Log Entry for December 13, 1944 1600-2000 Hrs
1600 Secured from General Quarters, set condition IIM. 1630 Changed course to 260 deg. 1700 Commenced zigzagging. 1707 Formation executed emergency turn to 210 deg. upon report of possible sub periscope. 1714 Contact determined to be a log. 1715 Enemy planes reported. Went to General Quarters. Formed anti-aircraft disposition 5VC. 1716 Haraden proceeding at 25 knots to picket station #11 in disposition 5VC. Changed formation course to 030 deg. 1717 Opened fire with main and 40mm batteries on enemy planes on starboard beam. Ceased fire with main battery having expanded 10 rounds of 5"/38 AAC. 1718 Enemy fighter dives on Haraden, is hit by gunfire from ship, and makes suicide crash into starboard side, hitting and exploding into #1 stack, carrying it away and putting forward fire room out of commission. Ceased fire with machine guns having expended 75 round of 40mm and 100 rounds of 20mm. 1730 Dead in the water, and without voice radio communications. 1735 Twiggs (DD591) came alongside to aid in extinguishing fires and in transferring of casualties. 1738 Cut away burning motor whaleboat. 1742 Jettisoned the starboard anchor. 1743 Transferred injured men to the Twiggs (FF591). 1750 Cut in boiler #3 to main steam line. 1751 Underway on port engine. Port 40mm gun (Francis) open fire on enemy aircraft. Ceased fire having expended 45 rounds. 1850 Rejoined formation on course 010 deg., speed 18 knots. 1920 Left formation with Twiggs escorting in accordance with orders of CTC 77.12, proceeding on various courses at maximum speed to arrive at southern end of Surigao Straits by daylight.
